6 Understand Severity Levels

Choose severity carefully — it affects how the defect is prioritised and reported:

SeverityUse WhenExample
MinorCosmetic or non-safety itemPaint scratch on fuselage panel
MajorAffects aircraft serviceabilityHydraulic fitting leak requiring seal replacement
CriticalAirworthiness or safety concernCrack on engine turbine blade
Critical defects should be resolved before the work order is closed. While the system does not enforce severity-based blocking, unresolved critical defects are flagged in compliance reports.
7 Impact on Work Order Closure

Open defects block work order closure. The WO cannot be closed until all defects are resolved.

The closure gate checks:

  • All non-deferred jobs must be SIGNED OFF.
  • All defects must be RESOLVED (zero open defects).

Resolve all open defects before attempting to close the work order. See Close a Work Order for the full closure process.

If a defect cannot be resolved during this maintenance visit, consider deferring the related job and creating a follow-up work order for the next scheduled opportunity.
